| No-Time Bread
10 to 12 cups sifted flour
3 cakes compressed yeast or dry yeast
¼ cup sugar
6 Tbsp lukewarm water
2 cups milk
¼ cup shortening
2 cups cold water
5 tsp salt
Add yeast and sugar to water. Scald milk. Pour over salt and shortening. Add cold water and let stand until lukewarm. Combine with yeast.
Add 4 cups flour; mix well and beat for 2 minutes. Work in 2 cups at a time until right consistency.
Knead 10 to 15 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Divide into 6 pieces, using 2 for each pan. Cover and let stand for 10 to 15 minutes. Mold into loaves. Place in greased loaf pans. Let rise in warm place for 30 to 45 minutes. Bake at 400 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes or until done. |
